Ceramics

Undergraduate Program

As a major in ceramics, you will take courses in art appreciation, art history, crafts, design and drawing, in addition to specific course work for your major. You will have access to large, well-equipped studios and instruction in a wide range of techniques.

Ceramics majors work with production pottery techniques and with ceramics as a sculpture medium. They explore pottery wheel and hand-building techniques, as well as firing and glazing procedures

A portfolio is not required for admission to these programs, although if you are a transfer student you may need to submit one for placement. At the end of your sophomore year, the studio faculty members in your area will review your portfolio to determine if you can continue in the program. You also must submit your work in a senior exit review.

UNT's studio faculty members are renowned artists in their chosen fields.

In ceramics, faculty members participate in national and regional exhibitions and frequently take students to shows and workshops. Ceramics students also can participate in CraftGuild, a student organization that sponsors shows and brings noted ceramists to campus.

Graduate Program

The Department of Studio offers a Master of Fine Arts degree at the graduate level. The Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts offers nine areas of specialization: ceramics, drawing and painting, fibers, metalsmithing and jewelry, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Each option requires a creative project and a solo exhibition instead of a thesis.
