Instruction
Review past discussions and lessons on the two works of art by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Discuss students’ interpretations of the works, and the intentions of the artist. The production activity will be for students to respond to the question, “How can we depict humor in art to express multiple meanings?” by creating a three-dimensional found object/paper collage sculpture of an occupation. The knowledge and understanding that students have developed during the previous lessons will assist them in the assignment. A list of suggested occupations is provided. Discuss with the class, record any additions, and have each student select one for their sculpture collage. Have students list 5 things that they believe defines and gives meaning to the occupation. Then have them sketch a humorous or allegorical portrait of the occupation. Next, they must collect the objects and pictures for their sculpture. Finally, students will assemble the collaged sculpture.
Summary
Upon completion, display student created sculptures. Have other students guess what occupation is portrayed. Discuss what elements of surprise or wit are incorporated in students’ work. Discuss how Arcimboldo might have portrayed the occupations selected by students.
Assessment
To what extent did students:
1. pick an appropriate occupation
2. utilize five things that define or give meaning to an
occupation
3. display in their sculpture projects humorous or allegorical
aspects of the occupation
Extensions/Interdisciplinary Connections
· Students will find other Arcimboldo-type works of art by doing research and will share their findings with the class.
· Pick a historic figure and depict in a humorous way through the creation of a work of art.
· Create a self-portrait depicting one’s personality and character in a allegorical way.
