THE ORIGIN OF
THE ART OF PERSUASION

This unit is based on “Portrayal of the Enemy,” a lesson developed by Michelle Acuff and Anita Torres during the Visual Arts Leadership Academy at the University of North Texas. Revised material and additions to the unit by Lisa Galaviz and Dr. Jaqueline Chanda.

Summary and Assessment

Compare the issues addressed and opinions expressed in the student-made posters with actual posters from WWII. Compare advertisements with their original counterparts.

Choose a few examples and allow students to explain to the class their marketing goal, and the effect of their target audience on creative decisions such as font, color scheme, and composition. Students can also use this opportunity to explain any persuasive language or techniques used in the ad. Students will turn in a written essay describing the target audience of their poster and explaning how the original work was changed to appeal to that audience.
